I AM A MORTAL KOMBAT FAN

Let me start off by thanking Ed Boon and John Tobias for coming up with the idea of creating this Mortal Kombat game.
It’s amazing how the first Mortal Kombat started with just 4 people, each working on different aspects of the game; the character design, the programming of movements, the background design, and the sound design.
It was the time when Street Fighter was getting crazy reception from the gamers, and they thought to make a fighting game that differs to what Street Fighter has to offer. Mainly it was the digitized graphics that sets it apart; as compared to the cartoon/ hand-drawn characters in SF. Then there were elements such as blood, the dark and violent atmosphere, and of course… Fatalities. Who doesn’t love Fatalities?

Fall of 1993, the team decided to bring the game to the consoles instead of just arcades. This, I think created the unwanted attention from disapproving parents. Creators of the game were even forced to replace the blood with a grey sweat type of liquid (or whatever it is) on the Nintendo console, that made Sega take over the console wars during that time (take that Nintendo – “Sega console owner”). Then there was this wave of angry politicians which birthed the rating system around 1993.
Sequels were still made despite the controversies (which I think made the game more interesting). Mortal Kombat 3 was released in 1995 and became my first MK game on a console since I played the first 2 on the arcades (remember Glico’s?). This is when I really began to learn the moves and trying out all the finishing moves such as Fatalities, Brutalities, Animalities, etc.
The switch from 2d plane to 3d presentations made the game less fun for me. As the video said, fans start to lose interest and they weren’t lying.
That is why I am having high hopes with the upcoming Mortal Kombat game for the PS3. This "taking it back to the roots" thing is making me excited for it. This is gonna be the longest wait for April 20 in my life.
